LinkedIn gives you great opportunities to reach out and connect with other professionals, but are you doing your outreach properly? Many professionals and marketers forget how important it is to go back to the basics of one-on-one interaction when they can just send multiple messages to different contacts with a simple click of a button.
Remembering these three simple lessons from personal interaction can help you create better LinkedIn messages that people will actually want to read and respond to.
Introduce Yourself Properly
How do start a conversation with someone you’ve never spoken to before? You introduce yourself, of course. The same principle applies in LinkedIn messaging. Your introductory line should include your name and a brief background. If you’ve already met this person at another event, or you were impressed by their latest blog post or presentation, this is the time to let them know.
You also need to use a subject line that’s as specific as possible. “Fellow Digital Marketer Interested in Killer Content Strategies” is much better subject line than “Loved Your Presentation”.
Tell Them Why You’re Approaching Them
Your introduction should serve as your message’s topic sentence. After your introductory line, you should get right into why you’re reaching out to the person you’re contacting. Keep it short and to the point, but don’t just say “I’d love to connect with you”. Why do you want to add them to your network? Go into further detail about how their blog posts really helped you out, or how you want to consult them about something that falls under their expertise.
If you’re asking for something, whether you want their help, participation, or advice, always keep your relationship with the person in mind. It might not be a good idea to ask someone to recommend you to their CEO if this is the first time you’ve ever communicated with one another.
Don’t Forget to Say Please and Thank You
Your closing statement should make it clear that you’re expecting a response, but don’t forget to be gracious about it. Remember that this person took the time to read your message all the way to the end, and you’ll want to thank them for their time.
